How much do you want to know? I would rather not bore you to tears, but here it goes.
I was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada to immigrant parents. That is me in the picture above. My mother is from Jamaica, and my father is from Trinidad. For those of you who do not know, Jamaica is a small island just south of Cuba, and Trinidad is an even smaller island which is less than ten miles north of the coast of Venezuela.
On August 15, 1995, I left Winnipeg and moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA to go to law school. An interesting fact is that Winnipeg is the coldest city in the Western Hemisphere with a population greater than 500,000 people. The ongoing joke during law school was that I moved south to Minneapolis to take advantage of the tropical weather (buhahaha, so not funny). Either way, leaving the Winnipeg tundra and venturing south to the Minneapolis tundra, I knew that my life was going to change forever.
During my first few weeks of law school, I came to the realization that it was nothing that I expected it to be like. Classes were boring, and all we did was read case, after case, after case. I swear, I must have read over 20,000 cases in my life. Can you say, boring?
However, I always finish what I start, so I graduated from law school in May of 1998, and passed the bar exam a couple of months later.
Fortunately, while completing my law degree, I decided to also go to business school to get a Master of Business Administration in Marketing. I graduated with an MBA in Marketing in 1999.
Now it is time to enter the real world.
I found that most jobs seeking an MBA also required at least 5 years of experience, which of course, I did not have. As a result, I began my career as both a lawyer, and an adjunct professor. However, my true interests had become business and marketing.
Nevertheless, I would practice law in the day, and then teach students Business Law, Marketing, and Accounting in the evening. While practicing law, I realized that I needed a way to attract clients. This is when I came up with the idea of writing weekly informative and educational articles on legal topics which I knew that potential clients would face. Since the Internet was still in its infancy, it was not yet the marketing tool that it is today. Therefore, I would publish these articles to free newspapers around the Twin Cities. As a result of my articles, I was able to demonstrate my expertise, motivate clients to call me, and build a thriving practice.
Still, practicing law was not my passion. Fortunately, after a few years as a practicing lawyer and adjunct professor, I was finally able to break into the marketing world with a large company headquartered right here in the Twin Cities. The only problem was that as large as this company was, there was not very much room to grow and advance my career. As a result, I decided to leave my position after a few years, and create the job which I have always dreamed of.
As you read this, I am heavily engaged in my dream job, and it is people like you who are making this possible for me. I cannot thank you enough for this.
